Fifth Grade Music

Piano Lab: Integrated practical keyboard skills, music theory & composition.

Opera Studies: Introduction to opera; vocal techniques; history of opera; opera stories; elements of opera production.

The Puppet Opera Project: Collaborative, interdisciplinary, experiential project drawing on studies in writing, history, visual art, and music. Students create an original opera from start to finish based on their study of Ancient Egypt.

Sixth Grade Music

Piano Lab: Integrated practical keyboard skills, music theory & composition.

American Folk Music: Introduction to American folk music; vocal techniques; practical instrument study; sub-genres of American folk music.

The Hudson River Presentation: Song Cycle Project: Collaborative, interdisciplinary, experiential project drawing on studies in English language arts, history, visual art, science, and music. Students create an original folk music song cycle outlining the life of a fictional Hudson River resident.

Seventh Grade Music

Music of the World’s Cultures: Introduction to music of Africa, South and Central America, Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia; introduction to ethnomusicology and its purpose.

Practical Musicianship: Ensemble skills; listening; rhythmic notation, patterns, and playing; applied harmonic structures and functions in a practical setting on a variety of instruments.

The Personal Musical Heritage Project: Culminating project that calls on students to synthesize experiences, new knowledge, and personal context to create a multimedia musical presentation about the music of their ancestral culture.

Eighth Grade Music

History of Rock & Roll: Introduction to American rock and roll addressed chronologically by decade with ties to historical and sociological markers of each era.

Songwriting: Introduction to songwriting through study of classic songwriting forms (i.e., blues) and analysis of song structure of popular music examples.

The Arts Expo Project: Culminating, collaborative project in which all students participate in writing & performing an original rock song.
